The majority of the 20th century saw South Africa something of a no-go zone for many people, purely on moral grounds – this completely changed in the early 90s and since then the country has become a hotspot for all different kinds of traveller from every part of the world. Those wishing for the traditional sun, sea and the rest of it holiday are catered for by South Africa’s wonderful beaches and all-year climate, those wanting eco-tourism are well catered for and have some wonderful natural sights to explore and those wanting a more business-oriented trip can look forward to some fantastic investment potential throughout the nation. Cape Town is one of the main stop off points for many people visiting South Africa, and the beautiful scenery of Tabletop Mountain does more than enough to lure in even the most sceptical of travellers. The political background of the country is a big draw for many that come to South Africa, and there are many different museums and areas of significance that are open to visit – Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, is one of the most popular spots for those interested in the history of the region – there are many more places of interest like it through the country. Other spots for those that are less interested in the past come in the shape of the Castle of Good Hope, the Baxter Theatre and the Groote Schuur Hospital Transplant Museum. Those wanting to sample the local delights of food, drink and dance are also well catered for, and it should be noted that there are some fantastic wines available for those that wish to partake in a tipple. Elsewhere in the country, cities such as Johannesburg welcome many visitors – though the city has a bad reputation when it comes to street crime, vigilance and common sense will make travels through the town much easier and rewarding. The largest city in the country, Jo’Burg is the site of some incredible sights – the clear divide between rich and poor being one of the less desirable ones, mind. Nevertheless, with attractions such as Constitution Hill, the Apartheid Museum and Johannesburg Zoo there is always something fascinating – for the right reasons – to experience. Port Elizabeth is another region many end up visiting, though the region is unspectacular and the city is dominated by industry. Even so, there is a great deal to take advantage of whilst in the area, from Settler’s Park Nature Reserve to the fantastic Humewood Beach. South Africa’s huge expanses of land are home to many more sights and sounds for visitors to explore, from the city of Durban and its Golden Mile beach (N.B. actually a lot more than a mile) through the many coastal beach resorts and on to the battlefields of Kwa-Zulu Natal. That’s not even mentioning Zululand, the Kruger National Park or Sun City – there really is enough to take up a few lifetimes in South Africa. With friendly people, good food and great wine, along with some truly world class attractions throughout and a history that fascinates as much as it disgusts South Africa is a fantastic country to visit.
