Whilst there are no major problems with safety in South Africa, crime is something of a problem. Usually limited to opportunistic thievery, common sense will help avoid any potential trouble – local authorities give priority to crimes committed against tourists and are making a real effort to stamp out problems. Vaccination against typhoid, cholera and certain other diseases may be required before travel – check with a doctor before travelling. Precautions against AIDS and HIV are highly recommended, owing to the pandemic in South Africa. Water in urban areas is generally safe to drink, but elsewhere should be boiled or otherwise sterilised before consumption.
